For my first fossil Friday I thought I would show off some of the plentiful fossils we can find in the Greater Toronto Area just by taking a closer look at your surroundings. Today is going to be a fairly short post as I am currently stuck in traffic and sitting on a bus. I’m not sure how long I have but want to get this out.
When I first started field work I found a crinoid and was exuberant, ecstatic, and brimming with pride. Then, as most of you can guess… I found another, and another, and another, and then maybe another couple thousand more that day. Most people would be sick of looking but I was hooked…. not on crinoids, but on looking closer at everything around me: I couldn’t wait to find something new.
Sometimes you see thousands of crinoids, trilobites, brachiopods, stromatolites, sponges, bryozoans, bivalves, and sometimes you find a neat little vertebrae to some unknown critter you need to research.
Keep your eyes open! Some fossils are right at your feet almost anywhere you go.
